A Wife On Paper Page 16

The marquee was a picture in yellow and white, and after lunch and a great many toasts Guy took Francesca’s hand and took the first turn around the dance floor to the applause of family and friends.

‘Do you realise that this is the first time we’ve danced together?’ she said.

‘We have a whole lifetime of firsts ahead of us, my love. Our first honeymoon—’

‘You can only have one proper honeymoon,’ she objected.

‘True, but once you’ve got the hang of it you can have endless improper ones.’

She giggled, then said, ‘Our first family holiday—’

‘By the sea. Rock pools and sandcastles and paddling.’

‘Toby will love it. And so will Harry Two.’ Then, ‘Our first Christmas together. Trimming the tree, buying presents—’

  ‘Toby’s first day at school—’

‘And before we know it he’ll be our first sulky teenager—’

  ‘Producing our first grandchild—’

She laughed. ‘Okay, you win. I really don’t want to go any further than that.’

He stopped. ‘You do know that I love you so much that I can hardly bear it, Francesca Lang?’

She knew, and she’d told him a thousand times, shown him in a thousand ways, how much she loved him. All but one. And now was the time.

‘Not Lang,’ she said. ‘Dymoke. I want the whole world to know that I’m your wife; “…from this day forward…” I am Mrs Guy Dymoke.’ And then, just to be sure that everyone had got the message, she put her arms around his neck and kissed him.
